Granular Material Responses to Air-Blast Wave Loading
Abstract Following the discussion on shock loading effects on sand barrier system against surface explosion in the previous chapter, this chapter discusses in detail the effects on sand deposit due to a simulated air-blast explosion. The chapter presents a new approach for evaluating the effects of air-blast on protective barrier made of sand using a shock tube test facility. Efforts have been made to study the stress wave propagation in loose and dense sand medium and its direct consequences on the vibrational response. An empirical equation has been developed for loose and dense sand, to predict peak particle velocity (PPV) against scaled blast distance. Also, digital image correlation (DIC) analysis results are presented for estimating displacement and strain contours during air-blast loading.
