Stability analysis of rock abutments of arch dams (a practical problem of the mechanics of rock formation)
Conclusions 1. Analysis of abutment stability of arch dams is the task of mechanics of rock formations which includes engineering-geological data on the structure of the rock massif, investigations of geomechanical properties of the formation in the massif, analytical evaluations of the dependability of the foundation, and experimental investigations. 2. Analysis of abutment stability is of great practical importance for determining the degree of reliability of the foundation for a given design of an arch dam as well as in finding an optimum solution which takes into consideration the conditions of the operation of the dam to gether with the foundation. 3. To increase the authenticity of the results of analysis, further work is needed in perfecting methods of obtaining the basic data on the foundation (primarily on shear-resisting characteristics of the rock formation in the massif) and on methods of analysis. For this it is necessary to carry out thorough theoretical studies and to investigate them on geomechanical models.
