Art Nouveau Schools in the Gothic Cloister of San Francisco de Betanzos
Summary. The decline of the convent of San Francisco de Betanzos (A Coruña) began in 1835 with the Confiscation of Mendizábal. The monastery was one of the most important in Galician history. Less than a century later, in 1917, the philanthropist Jesús García Naveira financed the construction of a new municipal school in this small town, located in the old cloister of the convent. The project was designed by Rafael González Villar. The architect was born in A Coruña, he was one of the most outstanding of his time in the city. The project was a modernist building with Central European influences. This communication has been supported by proven historical information. Virtual infographic reconstructions have been carried out to analyze and graphically explain the project of the municipal school and its relationship with the Gothic cloister of the convent. This work contributes to the knowledge of the historical heritage of Betanzos.
