High Resolution Core Level Shift Spectroscopy from Tungsten Single Crystal Planes
Abstract An extensive study of core level binding energy shifts from six different crystal planes of tungsten has recently been completed. Small shifts in the W4f core levels have been determined in the photon energy range 50 to 90. The data have been carefully analysed to determine the lineshape of the components of each spectrum, to pinpoint the contribution from the bulk, and hence to produce a description of the total lineshape of each spectrum. All of the resolved peaks produce a linear relationship between the observed shift in the W4f binding energy from the bulk value and the effective coordination number of the emitting W atom, with a scatter of data points within ± 50 m of this line, the largest shift being 400 m.
