Effectiveness of Seismic Upgrading of Confined Masonry Buildings by e-EXOS: A Case Study in Bucharest
Even in areas with high seismic exposure, the existing building stock is generally composed by buildings of the past century, designed according to old generation seismic codes or even without seismic provisions. Hence, these structures suffer from significant seismic deficiencies and need seismic upgrading. The e-EXOS system is a possible solution. It is a technique originally developed for seismic upgrading of RC framed structures in the framework of the e-SAFE research project funded by H2020 program. The e-EXOS system basically consists of a set of 3D steel trusses applied to the building façade to inhibit the formation of the story drift mechanism. In this paper the application of e-EXOS on a different structural type, i.e. masonry confined by RC members structures, and its effectiveness are investigated. To this end, the paper presents the case of a residential building in Bucharest not designed to sustain seismic excitation. The quality of the materials is poor and RC members are lightly reinforced. The seismic upgrading intervention of the building by e-EXOS system is presented and the achieved improvement of seismic performance is investigated. Nonlinear numerical models of the building before and after the application of e-EXOS are developed. Hence, nonlinear dynamic analyses are carried out. The results are used to quantify the beneficial effect of e-EXOS in terms of story drift angle demand, fragility curves and PGA capacity.
