Analysis of the Diffusion of BIM in the Brazilian Research Segment Using the Lattes Platform

Building information modeling (BIM) is a methodology that has promoted several benefits for the architecture, engineering, construction, and operation sector. Consequently, in Brazil, the Federal Government has sought to favor the gradual implementation and diffusion of the BIM methodology in the national territory through the publication of decrees. Given this, this paper aims to identify the impact of federal decrees on the Brazilian research segment. To this end, in a first step, a systematic literature review was performed with the objective of acquiring knowledge about BIM and the way the methodology has been taught. Then, a search for BIM research groups was conducted on the Lattes platform. The results pointed out that a relationship can be established between the growth of BIM research groups and the publication of the decrees. Further- more, it was found that there are more BIM research groups in civil engineering than in architecture and urbanism. Furthermore, it was found that the states of Paraná and Minas Gerais concentrate more research groups on BIM in the area of civil engineering while the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo concentrate more research groups on BIM in the area of architecture and urbanism. Finally, it was not possible to establish a relationship between the number of research groups per federative unit and the number of publications of the institutions in the Encontro Nacional Sobre o Ensino de BIM (ENEBIM).
