Evaluating Post-liquefaction Settlement and Lateral Deformation
The triggering of soil liquefaction leads to diverse consequences including post-liquefaction settlement and lateral spreading. The recent developments on the evaluations of post-liquefaction settlement and lateral displacement of soil deposits are introduced. The lateral spreading may be classified into two types: (1) limited deformation of the order of 1.0–5.0 m and (2) lateral spread involving unlimited deformation or flow failure. The limited deformation may be discussed in the same framework as in the case of post-liquefaction settlement. The issue of flow failure is discussed in Chap. 7 from different points of view. Some recent case history data are then introduced. The liquefaction-induced settlement of foundations is then examined based on shaking table tests. Some recent findings from centrifuge model tests on the mechanism and numerical modelling of lateral spreading are also introduced.
