The Modernist Culture of Building Materials in Umbria
The essay analyses the Modernism in Umbria, a central region of Italy, emblematic case study of a time and meaning translation of the progressive way of thinking of this architectonical culture. The study highlights the value of the traces of modernity, the infrastructures that have modernised the region, whose history shows the true role of man’s work in the construction of the landscape and of his current identity. Going into more detail about “doing architecture” it wants to analyse in depth the transformation in the use of materials, in order to highlight that “simple but Italian” context. On this basis, the text selects two different case studies inhert of authors of “minor architecture” in Umbria, useful to show the transformation of the aesthetic introspection, analysed through drawing and representation in the twenty-year intervals between 1920 and 1960.
