From the Utilisation of Rainwater to the Re-use of Grey Water: Some Thoughts Concerning the Iberê Camargo Foundation Museum
Abstract There has been a growing interest in many countries in the utilisation of rainwater in buildings, not only for reasons of rational water use, but also as a process of reducing flooding peaks during periods of rainfall. The same is observed in the re-use of grey water, another of the 5Rs of water efficiency in buildings. The Iberê Camargo Foundation building, in Porto Alegre, is an example of the application of these measures for the sustainable use of water in an urban environment. Countries like Germany and Brazil, for example, have already passed legislation on the utilisation of rainwater in buildings. Recently, a Technical Specification with the same purpose, to be applied voluntarily, was also published in Portugal, by ANQIP, a Portuguese association of universities/companies dedicated to the promotion of quality and efficiency of water supply and drainage in building installations. Using the Iberê Camargo Foundation building project as a case in point, this text offers a detailed analysis of the recent Portuguese specification and a comparison with the Brazilian Standard, referring to certain technical aspects of design and sizing of the installation’s components, as well as the demands for water quality in light of the various uses envisaged. Some comments are also made about the re-use of grey water and the prospects for this field in Portugal.
