A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Neutron Imaging Methods and Applications
Abstract Neutron imaging (NI) techniques based on direct transmission through macroscopic samples have enjoyed tremendous progress in recent years due to advances in digital imaging systems and new dedicated installations. Because of its high performance in terms of image frequency, dynamic range, and methodological variability, NI is now an option for research in many different fields. This chapter describes the main cases where the method can be applied with a high success rate, explaining the different features that are available today for material studies with state-of-the-art tools. Applications of NI are reported for studies in the earth sciences, mostly dealing with rock permeability, moisture transport, and porosity determination; in energy applications related to fuel cells, batteries, and nuclear fuel; and in the environmental sciences for studies related to root growth and wood research. Most of the results are based on investigations performed at the Paul Scherrer Institut beam lines for NI; further investigations carried out elsewhere are mentioned for comparison. An outlook for future research topics, linked to further methodological improvements and scientific demands, is also given.
