Shape Design Sensitivity Analysis of Nonlinear Nonconservative Structural Pproblems
Abstract The problem of design sensitivity analysis of nonlinear nonconservative systems is addressed using the continuum formulation. The principle of virtual work is used as the starting point and both the adjoint and direct variations methods are derived. Relative advantages and disadvantages of the two approaches for the history dependent problems are analyzed and discussed. The concept of reference domain is used to transform the problem to a fixed domain. This way, shape and nonshape design problems can be treated in a unified manner. The major effect of nonconservativeness of the problem is that the system matrices are asymmetric when the problem is discretized. Another major difference compared to other problems is that even for design sensitivity analysis, iterations are needed during solution of the sensitivity equations at the beginning of each load increment. Due to these reasons, the computational effort for such problems can be enormous.
