The Role of Skills Development in Smart Villages
This paper explores the role of education, with particular focus on skilling, in the development of smart villages. We draw upon the learning of academic researchers and integrate it with the experiences of practitioners at the grassroots to understand the role of skills development, and how we can overcome the challenges of developing relevant skills in rural communities across the world. We analyse the needs of learners, the availability of current skill development opportunities, the challenges faced by different rural community members in building the required skills, and the future possibilities of skill-building initiatives. Our approach acknowledges that to develop smart villages, it is important for villagers to have active engagement and ownership in developing initiatives that are customized to their needs, with the support of government, civic service organizations and other stakeholders.
