Numerical Studies on Effects of Embankment Layer Construction Period on Consolidation Settlements of Underlain Soft Soil
Embankment fills are constructed in layers keeping its fixed height obtained from the design. But the construction period of each layer varies site to site, i.e., the periods are selected randomly by the site engineers taking into account only the final design period fixed. This may cause the project lengthy and uneconomical. It is to be noted that, before starting the construction of an embankment, maximum settlement can be anticipated using finite element analysis by varying the embankment layer construction period and the layer thickness. In this paper, consolidation settlement of underlain soft soils was anticipated using ABAQUS software, keeping the properties and height of the embankment constant but varying its each layer construction period. However, layer construction periods greatly affect especially prefabricated vertical drains project. In the present study, a two dimensional analysis was considered. The total height of the embankment was selected as 3.6 m. The construction periods for each layer being 0.6 m high were selected as 4–14 days, generally considered in practical fields. The corresponding consolidation settlements of the top surface of the ground and embankments were observed with respect to time. Besides, variations of pore pressure and lateral movement of embankment fills with time were also determined. From the analysis, it was observed that an 8–11 days construction period exhibits reasonable consolidation settlement with the stipulated time and hence will also be economical in terms of engineering point of view. If the embankment height differs from 3.6 m, there may have another relation between the construction period and layer thickness. Hence, it may be concluded that the layer construction period must be taken care of in a particular embankment project, especially in a project related to prefabricated vertical drains construction where 3D consolidation takes place.
