Self-sustainability Framework for Cultural Heritage: A Case Study of Shekhawati, Rajasthan
The preservation of cultural heritage is being hampered by economic, political, socio-cultural, environmental, and technical issues everywhere in the world. Cultural heritage is valuable for many reasons than only its aesthetic qualities. Cultural legacy has worth that extends to education, local and global value, economic value, historical value, knowledge, and traditional values. The cultural heritage is in danger from aesthetic, structural, and usage degradation because of globalization and the unchecked expansion of modern cities. To create sustainable societies, The United Nations Foundation launched the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015. To “harness the power of heritage” for the benefit of people and the environment, ICOMOS adopted 17 recommendations in March 2021. Shekhawati, located in northern Rajasthan, experienced a Golden Age under the leadership of Shekhawat Rajput from fifteenth to seventeenth century. However, after the introduction of the locomotive during British administration in India in the middle of the nineteenth century, Shekhawati’s prominence was lost. Due to most of the once-built homes being abandoned, the area is currently under extreme pressure to disappear. To understand the ideal framework for the sustainability of built heritage regarding the Shekhawati region, an AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) was conducted with five experts in the field of architecture on all the factors that the author of this paper has compiled from various works of literature.
