Spatial Planning Strategies for Reducing Crime in Urban Residential Areas: A Case of Kollam
The study investigates the impact of crime prevention strategies, both physical and non-physical, on urban residential neighborhoods in Kerala. It posits that such strategies can restore a sense of empowerment and control over crime, thereby enhancing the quality of life. Through methods like visual audits, safety audits, and community participation, the research examines the current safety conditions in crime-prone areas within Kollam Corporation. Local interviews, visual observations, and cognitive mapping with diverse demographic groups shed light on residents' perceptions of safety and how they interact with their environment. The study suggests that environmental crime prevention measures not only deter situational crimes but also enhance the overall quality of urban spaces. However, it emphasizes that social factors must also be considered alongside spatial planning. Community-based crime prevention, involving local stakeholders, is highlighted as an effective approach to improving safety while fostering community cohesion. The research underscores the importance of empowering communities in addressing crime and enhancing neighborhood safety.
