Seismic Response Mitigation of Elevated Water Storage Tank Using Base Isolation System
Base isolation is very beneficial and significant idea to mitigate the vibration induced in a structure because of force exerted due to earthquake. It mainly transfers the primary frequency of the structure, away from the presiding frequencies of earthquake ground motion and the primary frequency of the fixed base superstructure. In this present study, seismic response of elevated water storage tank is observed using base isolator. For comparative study, two models of elevated water storage tank; a) without using base isolator b) using base isolator at the base of the structure are considered. Three types of liquid mass has been taken into consideration which are: -i) sloshing liquid mass in the top layer of water tank ii) impulsive liquid mass in the middle portion of water tank iii) rigid liquid mass at bottom potion of water tank. For parametric study of the seismic response, large tank is considered with different aspect ratio, different time period of structure, different damping ratio of elastomeric bearing and different time period of isolation system. To evaluate the seismic response, a time domain method is used in this study. It is observed that peak seismic response is reduced by about 58% in case of the isolated structure in comparison to the non-isolated structure.
