A Critical Overview of BIM (Building Information Modeling) and DT (Digital Twin): Challenges and Potentialities in Energy and Sustainability of Buildings
The building sector is still an important actor for reducing the fossil emissions and increase the sustainability in the planet. Therefore, innovative tools were developed to improve the management of building models, such as building information modelling (BIM) and the digital twin (DT). In this framework, this paper provides an overview of the role of BIM and DT in energy and sustainability of buildings. More than fifty papers were collected. Construction BIM models provide sufficient information for detailed energy analyses after the project is complete. Conversely, the DT model is a multidimensional and digital representation of physical assets, systems and processes that can speed up the development and benefits of BIM in the construction industry. The main aspects pointed out are (1) DT is a new tool applied to the construction sector, (2) BIM and DT can be reliable approaches to pursue energy saving and environmental strategies and (3) more efforts are needed to provide a suitable interoperability between BIM and DT. And this last topic could be the further step of the presented research.
