Micro- and Nanostructures: Preparation and Applications
Abstract In our society, communication and information transfer are playing a role of exponentially increasing importance. The bottleneck of information technology with respect to data transfer rates is apparent expressing the data flux in terms of data density times its transfer speed. Since the latter is physically limited at least by the speed of light, future strategies have to focus on the shrinkage of physical device dimensions. Special emphasize has to be placed on the material aspect as well as the development of adapted technological processes to realize nanoscale structures. Thus current developments require novel analytical as well as fabrication tools to span the bridge between microstructure technology and the fabrication of nanoscaled devices.
