Properties of Geopolymer and Its Utilisation in Construction as a Sustainable Material—A Review
The continuous manufacturing of cement has increased the quantity of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, making the problem of global warming more serious and having a detrimental effect on the environment. The building industry is paying more attention to geopolymer technology as a result of its sustainable approach and potential to decrease carbon emissions. Geopolymers are eco-friendly substances with three-dimensional silicon and aluminium tetrahedral structures that have the potential to be employed as sustainable building materials and so contribute to sustainable development. In this review paper, some helpful information on geopolymer materials is presented. Geopolymers can be employed in a number of construction materials, including concrete, mortar, stabilisers, and coatings, because, as compared to conventional building materials, geopolymers have higher strength, durability, and fire resistance qualities. The origin of the source materials, activators used, preparation techniques, and the various application areas of geopolymer were all covered in this paper. An environmentally friendly building sector can result from the sustainable utilisation of geopolymers in construction by reducing waste production and energy consumption. Despite the fact that geopolymer has many advantages, further study is still required to improve the technology and boost its adoption in the building and construction industry.
