Quality Control Testing of Cables for Accelerator Magnets
Abstract A large number of cables have been tested for the CBA, HERA, and SSC Projects. The short sample test procedures and apparatus are reviewed. A simple rule for estimating cable performance from measurements on strands taken from the cable is described. By using this “rule of thumb” cable vendors can make reliable estimates without having to invest in the substantial equipment required for full cable testing. Extracted strand tests should be checked periodically by full scale tests on complete cables.
