Study on Mechanical Properties of Cement Concrete for Partial Replacement of Coarse Aggregate by Shredded Plastic and Cement by Fly Ash and Metakaolin
Abstract Plastic has percolated to every nook and corner of the globe, due to which waste generated from plastic is increasing day by day. Plastic waste is the non-biodegradable. To overcome this problem, waste plastic is used as an alternative material in many industries. In the present experimental study, coarse aggregates in cement concrete are partially replaced by shredded plastic. Also, fly ash and metakaolin are used as partial replacement for cement. According to literature, optimum percentage of fly ash is 20% by volume of cement and shredded plastic is 22% by volume of coarse aggregates. To this fixed optimum percentage of plastic and fly ash in the concrete, to improve strength properties of concrete, metakaolin is added in the varying percentage of 0, 5, 10 and 15% of the cementations material, and experimental work was carried out to fix the optimum percentage of metakaolin.
