Reutilization of Eggshell Powder for Improvement of Expansive Clayey Soil
The use of chemical admixtures such as lime, cement, and bitumen in soil stabilization is incredibly expensive. As a result, it is advisable to replace these admixtures with economical alternative to reduce the cost. This study assesses the laboratory investigation into the possibility of using eggshell powder to improve the engineering parameters of expansive clayey soils. Five different amounts of eggshell powder (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5% by weight of dry soil) were used in the examination. Moreover, various experimental tests such as Atterberg’s limit, unconfined compression, direct shear, California bearing ratio, and swelling potential were investigated. The results showed that increasing the eggshell powder amounts improved the California bearing ratio, unconfined compressive strength and shear strength parameters up to a point, while decreasing the swelling potential and plasticity of expansive clayey soils remarkably.
