Parametric Processes in Graphical Architectural Thought
The idea of parametric systems in architecture is usually connected with relatively new digital processes and the production of architectural forms inseparable from the use of IT tools in both Computer Assisted Design and processes of calculation and computation. However, the use of parametric systems in design and construction processes can be identified much earlier than the arrival of computers in everyday graphic architectural design work.
This paper identifies the factors that define these processes and how they are more closely linked to thought, fundamentally graphical thought, than the tools which may in given circumstances be used in architectural design and creation. It argues that through these parametric processes we can read diverse architectural forms which, though separated in time, share a common geometric and generative foundations. This cannot be correctly understood without the generative process that gives rise to these architectural forms having previously been identified.
