Analysis of Soil Nail Excavation Considering Rayleigh Wave with Log-Spiral Failure Surface
Abstract In this paper, an analysis has been carried out to evaluate the stability of soil nailed vertical or nearly vertical excavations assuming the logarithmic spiral failure surface and using total seismic wave. The internal failure mode of the nailed cut is considered either by pullout, rupture or excessive bending whichever is critical. Also, the three different failure modes of rupture surface such as rupture surface passing through toe, slope or base is considered for the analysis and critical one is taken for presentation of factor of safety. Expression for the factor of safety is derived using moment equilibrium method. Results have been arranged in non-dimensional tabular form considering ranges of the design parameters that usually occur in practice. Analytical results have been compared with the findings of model tests and reasonably good agreement has been observed.
