Asphalt Paving in Airports as a Circular Economy Model
By proposing a revision of the circular activity concept and an analysis of asphalt pavement life cycle, the chapter provides an overview of how the asphalt paving phases can be considered as a circular economy model on airports. This study includes a limited review of the airport’s international standards to apply recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) in the different layers of the pavement structure and its limitations. The chapter presents the different classifications for the usual standards of the pavement treatments applied in airports’ maneuvering area along with the possibilities to apply materials from airside interventions in the land side area works and rehabilitations. After analyzing the positive economic aspects of recycled asphalt pavement utilization and associated with the new environmental policies to classify asphalt paving as a circular activity, this study aims to present the challenges faced by the airport industry with the existing standards and regulations to consider the use of RAP in the asphalt pavement structure design.
