APT Instrumentation – Where Do I Begin?
Instrumentation response data are an important tool in monitoring and evaluating accelerated pavement testing (APT). Using sensors correctly in order to gain meaningful pavement response information can be challenging. Understanding a variety of pavement sensors and how each sensor interacts with a pavement system is the initial step in deploying a successful instrumentation program. Various sensor types are available and, depending on the type of sensors used, there are multiple options as how to power and receive information from the selected sensors. Finally, storage of potentially massive amounts of information and interpretation of the results can be a challenge. This paper provides a general overview of sensor selection and installation and highlights some of the challenges observed based on the author’s experience in designing and implementing instrumentation systems for APT testing at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC).
