Cluster Shape Changes During Low Temperature Annealing
Abstract Recent in situ small angle neutron scattering experiments have been performed during the thermal ageing of an evaporated Al-7.5w%Cr-lw%Fe alloy.1 The sequence of scattering patterns observed suggested that radical changes in cluster shape were occuring during ageing. This paper describes the Monte Carlo simulations on model binary alloys which confirmed this interpretation of the data. An explanation is given in terms of the minimum coordination number of atoms in linear, planar and spherical clusters. New simulations are presented on the formation of Ll2 structure clusters in a face centred cubic lattice.
