Review of Probability Theory, Random Variables, and Random Fields
Regulatory bodies are increasingly asking geotechnical engineers to provide rational risk assessments to accompany their designs. In order to provide these assessments, practicing geotechnical engineers need a good understanding of both basic probability theory and the more sophisticated, but realistic, random field soil models. This chapter lays the groundwork for this understanding. Starting with the basics of probability, the reader is lead through the theory of random variables and random fields and how they can be used to realistically model spatially variable soils.
