Abstract Sand strength has kinematic nature and can be expressed as a sum of strength at the critical state and an additional, kinematic component, which is a function of the strain increment at failure. The strain increments at failure are dependent on the initial density, stress level and mode of deformation. The sand strength obtained according to our theory is well corroborated by test data from literature.
