Abstract Advanced materials are now used frequently in engineering design and that have opened for the possibility of material design. A general characteristic of these materials is that they are anisotropic, and this puts new demands on the analysis capabilities and optimization methods. In recent years a number of questions have been clarified, and the intention of the present paper is to distribute the knowledge gained. Active research areas are also commented on, and the concurrent design with a number of different design parameters are put forward.
