Damage to a Metro Tunnel Due to Adjacent Excavation

Cracks were observed on the segmental linings of one of the tunnels in the Xinyi Line of the Taipei Metro, presumably, as a result of ground movements induced by a deep excavation carried out in the vicinity for constructing a high-rise building. The excavation was temporarily held and the causes of cracks were investigated. Both the contractor of the metro project and the contractor of the building project retained professionals as witnesses to provide technical supports to defend for them. The designer of the metro project also offered technical opinions to the authority in charge of the metro project. Back analyses indicated that the cracks were within tolerance and the injunction was finally lifted.
