Risk Aspects in the Determination of Optimal Cropping Patterns
Abstract In semi-arid regions water is the limiting factor for agricultural production. To reduce this disadvantageous effect of the natural water supply, efficient water resources management is required. One possible way to reach this goal in irrigated systems is to adapt the cropping pattern of the irrigation area to the system’s water supply. Due to the stochastic character of the supply, this adaptation can be optimal only in a stochastic sense, which means there is a probability greater than zero that the water demand of the system cannot be satisfied at a given moment (i.e., a failure occurs). A highly flexible methodology (mixed simulation-optimization approach) is suggested to optimize cropping patterns of rather complex irrigation systems with respect to yield, failure, and nonproductive water losses. The optimization is achieved using a standard parameter optimization algorithm.
