Seismic Vulnerability Index Approach
This chapter introduces a proposed seismic vulnerability index (SVI) approach for assessing the earthquake risk of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings, which simplifies the process significantly. The method used is based on the European Macroseismic and Italian GNDT techniques, with some modifications made along the way. An estimation of RC vulnerability indices required modeling eight factors across three unique vulnerability classes. The Earthquake Resistant Design (ERD) was used to classify the vulnerable buildings into three categories: low, moderate, and high. To determine how much emphasis should be placed on each parameter when determining the seismic vulnerability index for a given Peak Ground Acceleration, a Non-Linear Temporal History Analysis and Non-Linear Static Analysis were performed. To be aware that the scale runs from 0 to 1 to indicate the degree of vulnerability to earthquakes. Once the SVI is established, the mean damage grave is developed.
