Multi-patch Geometrically Nonlinear Isogeometric Analysis of Spatial Beams with Additive Rotation Updates
This paper is concerned with numerical simulation of geometrically nonlinear spatial Timoshenko beams using multi-patch isogeometric analysis. In this work, the total rotation of a cross-section is represented by an orthogonal tensor, which is parameterized by a rotation vector. A relation between the variations of the orthogonal tensor and the rotation vector is employed. The displacements of the beam axis and the rotation vector are considered as unknown kinematics. This set of unknown kinematics enables the common additive update procedure to be used, and the requirement for secondary storage manipulations is removed. Non-uniform rational B-spline curves are used for approximations of both the geometry and unknown kinematics. A well-established example is analyzed to show the accuracy of the proposed approach.
