A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Basics of Structural Thermal Insulation in Connection with WPCs
Chapter 2 first introduces the main selection criteria for building materials and products in accordance with the Construction Products Regulation 305:2011 demanding more biobased building materials. WPC not only fulfils this aspect, but also has interesting properties in terms of building physics. Firstly, the basics of structural thermal insulation are explained and the key characteristic values for a WPC façade profile are determined. In addition, the temperature curve for an external wall structure with inner WPC cladding is demonstrated using the Glaser method. Particular attention will be paid to WPC profiles as window frames. New research results will also be reported as regards the integration of phase change materials in WPC hollow profiles to reduce climate loads on the building. Finally, the topic of heat storage in the WPC material is addressed and the advantages of contained wood fibres are highlighted. This chapter is rounded off with repetition exercises.
