Stick-Slip Motion and the Associated Frictional Instability Caused by Vertical Oscillations
We investigate the influence of harmonic normal force on the frictional sliding. Frictional sliding demonstrates stick-slip motion even when the friction coefficient is constant. Applying vertical oscillations with a proper phase shift with respect to the beginning of the stick slip process creates a time window of decreasing stick-slip velocities. Reducing the amplitude of the harmonic normal force delays the time of the appearance of the window but extends its duration. More surprisingly, the reduction in the amplitude of the normal force oscillation leads to decreasing the stick-slip velocity within the time window.
