Reclaimed Rubber
Abstract Charles Goodyear invented the process of sulfur vulcanization in 1839 and as a result of that discovery the rubber industry was much expanded. The first products manufactured in the 1840’s were footwear but soon many different types of proofed goods, sheet rubber, car springs, and hard rubber articles were being produced. In those days, before the establishment of india-rubber plantations, all raw rubber was collected from the jungles of Brazil. Demand for crude rubber soon outstripped supply, with prices tripling even before the Civil War. There was a great economic incentive to spur the development of methods of reusing scrap vulcanized rubber.
