Performance Analysis of Different Geosynthetic Reinforcements in Unpaved Roads of Soft Subgrade
In this research article, a model plate load setup is used to evaluate the effectiveness of a geosynthetic-reinforced unpaved road section over a soft clayey subgrade. The plate load test is executed in a steel tank of 1 m × 1 m × 1 m, with the subgrade and base layer of 600 mm and 210 mm thickness, respectively. A manually driven hydraulic jack is used to exert load through a circular footing. The relative benefit of different reinforcing geosynthetic materials, such as nonwoven and woven geotextiles, geogrid, and geocomposite, is investigated and found that the geosynthetic materials increase the soil-aggregate system’s load resisting capability. The test findings are analyzed to determine the effectiveness of different reinforcements, and an improvement factor (IF) is calculated. The results indicate that geocomposite consisting of woven-geotextile and geogrid is the most effective one out of all the tested reinforcing arrangements to improve the soft subgrade’s strength.
