Cities as Living Labs of Knowledge, Co-creation and Innovation
Cities are humanity’s masterpieces, unrivalled theatres of creativity at the crossroads of very diverse journeys, individual and collective, educational and scientific, technological and artistic, local, regional and global. Diverse cities are reputed to be unlimited sources of innovation, out of exceptional ideas and unique exchanges. The urban heritage encompasses awesome forms of human expression. Knowledgeable cities have a leading role in reinforcing the bond between cities and citizens through new discoveries, entrepreneurial action and cultural creation. The decisive role of digitalisation in emergency responses during the pandemic could lead cities to a more systematic integration of smart tools and virtual spaces in their functions, based on ethical rules and societal acceptance.
Ideas constitute an inexhaustible resource and a powerful global currency. They matter most for challenges which are too big or too complex and have to be collectively addressed. A sustainable city has to cultivate the seeds of freedom for science and the arts to bloom and offer a space to all wishing to express and exchange ideas and interact. This chapter presents a spectrum of actions to reinforce urban intellectual and cultural capital and make citizens proud of their physical and intangible assets. It also explores the possibilities of responsible artificial intelligence to augment and complement human intelligence and create new sustainable assets based on fundamental values.
