Surface Magnesium by Spin Polarized Electrons
Abstract Spin polarized electrons are an ideal tool for studying bulk and surface magnetism. Effects of quantum mechanical exchange in elastic and inelastic electron scattering are readily observable with spin modulated electron beams from semiconductor photocathodes, and provide an extremely rich variety of interesting and new phenomena pertinent to open questions in metallic magnetism. Applications include viewing of magnetic domains with unprecedented spatial and time resolution, and non-destructive depth profiling of remanence and coercive force.
