Stability criterion of a laminar flow
Conclusions 1. During flow in pipes roughness affects the hydraulic resistance coefficient in the entire laminar region. Relation (8) and other theoretical relations of laminar flow in pipes are valid only for smooth pipes. 2. The lower critical value of the Reynolds number varies in wide limits depending on the pipe roughness. Its generally accepted value (1) is not universal and is valid only for smooth pipes. 3. An energy criterion (18) was established, the lower critical of which (20), just as the lower critical values (25), (28), (32) of its modifications, determining the moment of the loss of stability by laminar flow, are universal for pipes with various roughness.
