Study on Spandrel-Pier Interaction in Masonry Walls
Most of the time, masonry walls are tested in the laboratory or simulated in finite element software by considering them as piers. The spandrels connect the piers in actual masonry buildings, which may considerably affect their behavior. It has been observed during past earthquakes that spandrels are critical elements in masonry buildings, which must be carefully examined while analyzing the masonry walls. Past studies have shown that spandrel geometry has a noticeable impact on masonry wall behavior. However, not enough attention has been paid to it. The present study investigates the influence of spandrel depths on the in-plane behavior of masonry walls. Further, the effect of spacing between openings, which in turn affects the spandrel length, has also been studied. Masonry walls have been modeled using the concrete damage plasticity (CDP) model in the finite element software Abaqus. The results are obtained in terms of pushover curves. Further, the influence of spandrel lengths and depths on the damage pattern of the walls has also been examined.
