Sustainable Mobility in the Urban and Metropolitan Areas of Mediterranean
This chapter focuses on the Mediterranean Basin and on the urban and metropolitan systems facing their coastal areas. The author wants to explore the ways in which the 23 countries of the area are trying to cope with the problems created by climate change developing actions to reduce their environmental impact. The current situation portrays the Mediterranean Basin as highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Evident effects include drought, extreme weather events, increased temperatures, reduced soil fertility, and more. The aim of this chapter is to investigate various aspects related to climate change in this basin. It highlights the contribution of the riparian nations to emissions and their subsequent responses. In this regard, it delves into the negative impact of mobility, identifying possible mitigation and adaptation measures to reduce the sector’s impact. The chapter is divided into three sections. The first section explores the conditions of the Mediterranean Basin. The second section examines the contributions of Mediterranean countries to emissions. Finally, the third section discusses potential mitigation and adaptation strategies, with a focus on urban mobility.
