An Interpretation of the Extinct Urban Morphology of Jaén’s Historic City Center as Viewed Through the Drawings of Architect Luis Berges Roldán
In recent decades, Jaén’s historic city center has undergone obvious physical changes in its urban morphology. These changes are the result of multiple, converging factors whose influence has grown unchecked for too long.
The regulations established in city plans (Plan General de Ordenación Urbana – PGOU) and the special preservation and restoration plans (Plan Especial de Protección y Reforma Interior – PEPRI) that pertain to this part of the city do not reflect calls to preserve the key architectural characteristics that have long contributed to this unique place. Thus, because these plans will be revised in the near future, it seems appropriate to sound the alarm and call for the essence of Jaén’s old town to be restored.
Luis Berges Roldán’s drawings are eloquent documents that accurately and rigorously depict the former appearance of several of the sites that the city has lost. This material is not only of historical interest. Careful examination reveals that it can serve as a reliable source on which an action plan for the future could be based.
