Descriptive Study on Disaster Awareness in Yogyakarta Housing Community
The people of Yogyakarta live with earthquake risk every day. During previous earthquakes, residential building damage was the most significant loss. Minor renovation or total rebuilding level, housing procurement is a big agenda in post-disaster recovery. The post-disaster financial assistance provided is limited, and people often need to spend quite a lot of personal funds to restore their housing needs, thus disrupting the family economy. A survey was conducted on disaster risk awareness among Yogyakartans living in residential areas, villages, and vertical dwellings in Yogyakarta. The physical quality of the dwelling and the community's preparedness to face disaster risk were examined through field observations, questionnaires, and interviews. Many landed house owners did independent building development without legal processes or professional supervision, creating a risk to the building’s strength. It can lead to future vulnerability of the building and the environment, and another disruption in the family economy.
