Investigation of Groundwater Pollution Minimization using Compacted Bentonite Barriers
Abstract Compacted bentonite is used as engineered barriers in contaminate site. The aim of this paper is to assess the effect of a barrier thickness and bentonite percentage to minimize groundwater pollution. Groundwater model is constructed to simulate solute transport. In order to control the migration of toxic, a compacted bentonite barriers are proposed with different thicknesses such as 1.5, 2 and 2.5 cm and different bentonite percentages (20, 35 and 50%). According to the experimental results, it found that the hydraulic conductivity decreases with the increase of bentonite percentage and bentonite percentages varies between (20–50) % seem to be suitable for constructing hydraulic barriers taking into consideration that barrier thickness is an important parameter in such cases. Results show that removal efficiency reaches about 61.8% in experimental model. Numerical modelling affirmed an acceptable coincidence with experimental results and it can be used successfully to simulate such phenomena.
