Phase Transitions
In this chapter we elaborate on the general properties and dynamics of phase transition (PT) by means of case studies from physics, biology and cognition. This, as a preparatory step toward Chap. 10 on phase transition and the city. Cases of PT in Physics include the transition of the H2O molecules from water to ice and to gas, the phenomena of ferromagnetism and of superconductivity. In the context of biology and cognition, cases of nonequilibrium phase transition (NPT) abound and here we discuss characteristic features of NPTs such as the phenomena of “critical slowing down”, “critical fluctuations” and “symmetry breaking”. We also relate the above to the theory of fractals and its property of self-similarity. While the first part of the chapter is descriptive, the second suggests the corresponding mathematical formalism.
