Crack Propagation Analysis in Concrete Dams Based on the eXtended Finite Element Method
Abstract In this paper, crack propagation in concrete dams is investigated using the eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM). The implementation of the crack model is undertaken through the development of a sub-program coded for this study. In order to simulate crack propagation, two level set functions are developed to represent a moving interface. The discontinuity of displacement due to the crack is introduced by a generalized Heaviside function and the addition of the asymptotic fields near the crack tip in order to improve the accuracy in elastic fracture mechanics. A validation example is presented to demonstrate the analysis procedure and capacities of the model. The results obtained show that the proposed model enables an accurate calculation of the Stress Intensity Factors (SIFs) and performs well for predicting crack trajectories. Finally, this work is applied to analyze and predict the fracture response in concrete dams and to evaluate the dam safety against cracking.
