Difficulties Facing the Implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the Egyptian AEC Industry
The construction sector in Egypt has recently seen significant growth, due to the Egyptian government’s vision to develop economic activities and increase potentials to construction market. Hence, the government started gradually implementing BIM process to the Egyptian AEC industry in order to improve its productivity. Building information modelling (BIM) is becoming a widespread and common approach in the design, construction and maintenance of building facilities as BIM decreases waste, improves construction quality and increase collaboration among the construction stakeholders. On the other hand, the Egyptian construction market exhibits shortage of efficiency in BIM application, projects delay and less quality of integrated project delivery process. It becomes very necessary to find a way to improve these inefficiencies by adopting new solutions and approaches. This paper addresses difficulties facing BIM operations in the Egyptian AEC industry and proposes a preliminary framework towards examining complications facing its implementation. The framework developed is based on examining four main aspects derived from literature review, namely the aspects cover technology, cost, process and policy. Through a questionnaire survey, the study explored BIM capabilities, BIM awareness and BIM maturity of the Egyptian AEC players. Based on the questionnaire findings and literature review, this study is considered as an assessment of complications facing implementation framework of building information modelling in the Egyptian AEC industry. The framework proposed will be used as a reference for the Egyptian researchers and professionals.
