Use of Geosynthetic Materials in Road Construction
Geosynthetic and geoplastic materials are advanced materials in road construction, the use of which is relevant in the improvement of road structures and construction technology. This contribution investigates the peculiarities of geosynthetic materials application in road structures. On the basis of a complex of factors the durability of geosynthetic and geoplastic materials used in road construction and the conditions of their application to increase the service life of road pavement are substantiated. The use of geosynthetic materials in road pavement structures affects the quality improvement, which is confirmed by calculations for strength, shear resistance, and frost resistance. It is proved that reinforcement of pavement structure with geosynthetic material gives economic effect and increases its qualitative characteristics. The classification of geosynthetic materials is made, their characteristics and conditions of application are described. In order to improve the reliability of highways, the need to use geosynthetic materials in road structures for reinforcement and drainage has been substantiated. Experience in the use of such materials indicates insufficient efficiency in using their capabilities.
